Impregnations and stiffeners
These are chemical compounds that prevent the wear of
the cotton, sisal, etc. fibres, by sealing them, increasing their
melting/breaking point, or giving the polishing paste a greater
adherence.
We distinguish two groups: stiffeners and impregnations.
The former are treatments applied to the cotton fabrics
at their origin. The manufactured disc has a greater resistance to work
pressure but the adding of polishing paste is more difficult.
The latter are treatments applied to the discs once they
have been manufactured. We distinguish two types of treatments:
Firstly, varnishes, and secondly, thermally hardened plastics. The
latter preserve the mechanical qualities of the disc through time and
do not become harder through time as is the case with varnish
treatments.
As for the stiffeners:
- White stiffener: great hardness
